PSHE

At Portfields Primary School, we believe that PSHE education is fundamental to the development of happy, healthy, and successful children. It equips our pupils with the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.

Intent

Our PSHE curriculum is designed to:

  • Foster: A safe and supportive environment where children feel valued and respected, and where they can develop positive relationships with others.
  • Inspire: Children to develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence, and to believe in their ability to achieve their goals.
  • Innovate: By providing a wide range of engaging and relevant learning experiences that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

We aim to empower our pupils to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing, to understand and manage their emotions, to develop resilience, and to become responsible and active citizens.

Implementation

We use the Jigsaw PSHE programme to underpin our PSHE curriculum. Jigsaw is a comprehensive and progressive scheme of work that covers all aspects of PSHE education, including:

  • Being Me in My World: Developing self-awareness, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.
  • Celebrating Difference: Understanding and valuing diversity, challenging stereotypes, and promoting equality.
  • Dreams and Goals: Setting personal goals, developing perseverance, and managing setbacks.
  • Healthy Me: Understanding physical and mental health, making healthy choices, and staying safe.
  • Relationships: Building positive relationships, managing conflict, and understanding different family structures.
  • Changing Me: Understanding puberty, managing emotions, and developing resilience.

Each year group follows the Jigsaw scheme of work, with lessons being adapted to meet the specific needs and interests of our pupils. We use a variety of teaching methods, including:

  • Circle Time: A safe and supportive space for children to share their thoughts and feelings.
  • Role-play: Exploring different scenarios and developing empathy.
  • Discussion: Encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Creative activities: Expressing emotions and exploring different perspectives.

Impact

Our PSHE curriculum has a positive impact on our pupils' personal, social, and emotional development. Our pupils:

  • Demonstrate: A strong sense of self-worth and confidence.
  • Show: Respect for themselves and others.
  • Develop: Positive relationships with their peers and adults.
  • Make: Informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
  • Understand: And manage their emotions.
  • Become: Responsible and active citizens.

We regularly assess the impact of our PSHE curriculum through pupil voice, teacher observations, and parent feedback. We use this information to inform our planning and to ensure that our curriculum continues to meet the needs of our pupils.
