PE
Intent:
At Portfields Primary School, we believe a high-quality PE curriculum is vital for every child. Building on the 2014 National Curriculum, our framework fosters lifelong enjoyment of physical activity, develops fundamental movement skills, and promotes health and well-being for all. We empower pupils to participate confidently, embrace challenges, and collaborate constructively, regardless of ability or background.
Implementation:
Core Principles:
- Skill Development: Our curriculum breaks down progression into clear areas (Striking & Fielding, Net & Wall, Invasion Games, Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics, Outdoor Adventurous Activities), ensuring mastery of core skills and building a strong foundation.
- Swimming Proficiency: By the end of Year 3, we aim for all children to confidently swim 25 meters, prioritising safety and enjoyment in the water.
- Spiral Learning: Each lesson includes "flashbacks" (know or show) to revisit past learning, reinforcing skills and building connections across units.
- Competitive Opportunities: Lessons provide opportunities for healthy competition, fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience.
- Skill Acquisition & Application: Activities allow pupils to acquire new skills, apply them strategically, and evaluate their performance to refine their technique.
- Healthy Lifestyle Promotion: We infuse lessons with information and activities that promote healthy eating, active lifestyles, and an understanding of overall well-being.
Curriculum Framework:
- National Curriculum Alignment: Our curriculum adheres to the 2014 National Curriculum's PE requirements, ensuring coverage of essential skills and knowledge.
- Primary PE Planning Foundation: We utilise the Primary PE Planning Curriculum as a comprehensive foundation, adapting and extending it to ensure the best possible PE lessons.
- Specialist Delivery: Specialist sports coaches deliver PE lessons, maximising expertise and fostering engagement.
- Inclusive and Differentiated: We ensure all pupils can participate and progress, providing adaptable activities and interventions as needed. We use the STEP (Space, Time, Equipment, People) principles to adapt activities to meet the needs of all learners.
Assessment and Evaluation:
- Continuous Feedback: Formative and summative assessments provide ongoing feedback, monitoring progress and tailoring instruction to individual needs.
- Observation and Self-Reflection: We encourage self-reflection on performance and progress, empowering pupils to take ownership of their learning.
- Self Assessment: We encourage our KS2 children to assess their progress each lesson against unit specific criteria
- Monitoring and Improvement: Regular monitoring through observations, pupil voice, and data analysis ensures ongoing curriculum refinement and effectiveness.

Through our diverse and engaging PE curriculum, we strive to equip our pupils with:
- Lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and participation in various sports.
- Fundamental movement skills, confidence, and competence in different activities.
